Every New York City student deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader. Through NYC Reads, New York City Public Schools is bringing evidence-based literacy instruction to classrooms across the city, helping students build the skills they need to learn, grow, and thrive.

The Fund partners with NYCPS to bring private support from the philanthropic community to invest in the district-wide implementation of NYC Reads.

Why Literacy Matters

Literacy is the cornerstone of learning and a crucial aspect of racial and socioeconomic equity. We must do better for our children and educators. NYC Reads is designed to tackle the challenges that NYC—and so many districts across the country—face in ensuring all students receive quality literacy instruction.

Every student deserves access to rigorous, grade-level learning experiences that build knowledge, confidence, and critical thinking skills. NYC Reads helps ensure that students—including multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and students in historically under-resourced communities—have access to high-quality instructional materials and evidence-based literacy practices that support success.

Strong literacy skills do more than improve reading proficiency. They help students engage more deeply across all subject areas, strengthen communication and critical thinking skills, and prepare for future academic, career, and life opportunities. As NYC Reads expands across the city, schools are seeing students build confidence as readers, participate more actively in classroom discussions, and develop the foundational skills needed for lifelong learning.

Why Literacy Matters

New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) has a bold vision to reimagine the learning experience for all students from birth through graduation. In spring 2023, NYC Reads was launched to fulfill this vision, ensuring that every student in NYC public schools develops strong reading skills, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Through evidence-based curriculum, educator coaching and professional learning, targeted interventions, and ongoing evaluation, NYC Reads is strengthening literacy instruction across schools citywide. The initiative equips educators with the tools, training, and resources needed to support student learning while creating more consistent and engaging literacy experiences for students.

By investing in both classroom instruction and system-wide supports, NYC Reads is helping build strong reading foundations, advance educational equity, and expand opportunity for New York City students.

 Building on evidence and insights from literacy bright spots outside the five boroughs, NYC Reads is distinguished by three core elements:
